Ethylene Oxide by GC/ECD


This method describes the sample collection and analysis of ethylene oxide. Samples are collected by drawing a known volume of air through hydrobromic acid-coated charcoal tubes to produce 2-bromoethanol. Following desorption with dimethylformamide (DMF), an aliquot of the sample is derivatized to its (HFBI) heptafluorobutyrylimidazole, and analyzed by gas chromatography using electron capture detection. While this sampling method can give reliable results with careful attention to details, the inherent instability of EtO on charcoal can present serious problems. In addition, the method is not as sensitive as may be necessary for measuring sub-ppm exposure levels.

Required Preps:   The sampling tube consists of a 6-mm OD.× 4-mm ID × 45-mm glass tube packed with two sections of 24% by weight hydrobromic acid-coated charcoal. The front and back sections contain 100 and 50 mg of the coated charcoal respectively.
Collection Method:   Solid sorbent charcoal tubes: 24L @ 0.1L/min.
