Method 552.1

Determination of Haloacetic Acids and Dalapon in Drinking Water by Ion-Exchange Liquid-Solid Extraction and Gas Chromatography with Electron Capture Detection

This is a gas chromatographic (GC) method applicable to the determination of halogenated acetic acids (HAA's) in drinking water, ground water, raw  water and water at any intermediate treatment stage.  In addition, the chlorinated herbicide, Dalapon, can be determined using this method.

A 100mL sample is adjusted to pH 5.0 and extracted with a preconditioned miniature anion exchange column.  A liquid-solid extraction disk can be used as long as all quality control criteria specfied in the method are met.   The sample is analyzed by GC/ECD (electron capture detector).

Tribromoacetic acid was not validated for this method because of problems associated with its stability and chromatography.

This method is similar to Method 552.2 but uses a liquid-solid extraction instead of a liquid-liquid extraction.

Method Data

Hold Times, Preservatives, Preps, Collection, Analytical & Documentation
Holding Time:   Samples dechlorinated with ammonium chloride are stable for up to 28 days. Extracts should be analyzed within 48 hours following preparation.
Preservatives:   Add crystalline ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) to bottle to produce a concentration of 100mg/L. Alternately, add 1.0 mL of a 10 mg/mL solution of NH4Cl for each 100mL of sample. Store samples at 4°C and keep away from light.
Required Preps:   250mL Amber glass bottle with Teflon-lined lid
Collection Method:   Grab sampling
Analytical Methodology:   GC/ECD
Documentation:   552.1

* The analytes and detection limits listed for each method represent the typical detection limits and analytes reported for that particular method. Keep in mind that analyte lists may vary from laboratory to laboratory. Detection limits may also vary from lab to lab and are dependent upon the sample size, matrix, and any interferences that may be present in the sample.
