Method TO-6

Determination of Phosgene in Ambient Air Using HPLC

This method is for the collection and analysis of phosgene in ambient air.  Air is passed through a solution of aniline to form carbanilide which is analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

The sample is collected using a rotameter, pump and three midget impingers.  The first two impingers are filled with 10mL of aniline/toluene (2:98 v/v).  The third impinger contains silica gel.  After sample collection, the impinger solution contents are combined into a glas bottle.  The impingers are rinsed with toluene and the rinse is added to the impinger contents.  Mark the volume level on the bottle before shipment.

The sample is taken to dryness by the lab under a stream of nitrogen, the residue is dissolved in 1 mL of acetonitrile and analyzed by reversed-phase HPLC with UV detection.
