Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide


This method is for the collection and analysis of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) from workplace air.  The sample is collected using midget impingers.  The impingers are filled with 15mL of dimethyl phthalate.  After collection, 5mL of diphenylcarbazide color reagent is added to an aliquot of the impinger solution and analyzed by visible absorption spectrophotometry (VAS).

The working range of the method is 0.11 to 1.1 ppm (0.75 to 7.5 mg/m3) for a 100L air sample.

The diphenylcarbazide color reaction is relatively non-specific.  Most ketones, except for acetone, will exhibit positive intereference at high levels.  Other peroxides or strong oxidants might also present positive interferences.
