Method 7600

Hexavalent Chromium

This method is used for the collection and analysis of hexavalent chromium.  The sample is collected on a 5 micron polyvinyl chloride membrane (PVC) filter.  After collection, the filter is extraction with 0.5N H2SO4 (sulfuric acid) or 2% NaOH (sodium hydroxide) - 3%Na2CO3 (sodium bicarbonate) and analyzed by visible absorption spectrophotometry.

The working range of the method is 0.001 to 5 mg/m³ for a 200L air sample.  Iron, copper, nickel, and vanadium my cause interferences with the analysis.

NOTE: This method combines and replaces P&CAM 169, S317, and P&CAM 319.  The chromium (VI) criteria document contains a method similar to P&CAM 169.
