This method is used to determine the concentration of gasoline range organics in water and soil. This corresponds to an alkane range of C6-C10 and a boiling point range between approximately 60 and 170° Celsius. Gasoline or other specific petroleum products may be identified by the use of pattern recognition. Water or low level soil samples can be analyzed directly for gasoline range organics by purge-and-trap extraction and gas chromatography. High level soil or waste samples are dispersed in methanol to dissolve the volatile organic constituents. A portion of the methanolic solution is analyzed by purge-and-trap GC following the normal water method.
